Disabling NoRun Windows App

SPLUNK detection rule by Teoderick Contreras, Splunk, Steven Dick · Apache-2.0

The following analytic detects the modification of the Windows registry to disable the Run application in the Start menu. It leverages data from the Endpoint.Registry data model, specifically monitoring changes to the registry path "*\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer\\NoRun" with a value of "0x00000001". This activity is significant because the Run application is a useful shortcut for executing known applications and scripts. If confirmed malicious, this action could hinder system cleaning efforts and make it more difficult to run essential tools, thereby aiding malware persistence.

how_to_implement: To successfully implement this search, you need to be ingesting logs with the registry value name, registry path, and registry value data from your endpoints. If you are using Sysmon, you must have at least version 2.0 of the official Sysmon TA. https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/5709

Executable code, not a declarative rule

This submission is arbitrary [[ currentRule.format ? currentRule.format.toUpperCase() : '' ]] code, not a declarative detection rule — review it as you would any script before running it, and note that it cannot be safely aggregated or auto-executed alongside YARA/Sigma/Suricata/CRS rules.

Format & documentation suggestions

Not a security issue — this rule is valid and was accepted as-is. These are optional fields/conventions its own format recommends, mainly affecting its quality score and how well it documents itself for other reviewers.
